Bushcraft Fundamental Course

Our Introductory Bushcraft & Survival Course. Monster Adventure Bushcraft Fundamentals course is aimed at those who want to learn how to live more comfortably in the wilds, but do not want to have the weekend or overnight experience.

This course covers the basic skills required to survive, and is based on the four main principles of survival- fire, food, shelter and water. Throughout the day you will learn how to build an emergency shelter, collect and purify your water, prepare your own food, and how to light a fire.

This one-day course takes place at Low Wood Activity Centre.

The course adapts to the changing seasons, but below is a typical example of the Bushcraft Fundamentals Course.

From the meeting point we walk in to the woodland. During this walk your instructors will introduce you to some essential tree ID, and some of the useful foraging materials that surround us.

Upon arrival at camp and following an initial safety brief you are issued with your own Bushcraft Knife for the day. We then make ourselves comfortable, gather materials for, and light the fire. It is then time to look at safe shelter construction- specifically location, materials, and design. This culminates in the group building a one-man kennel shelter.

Everything in the outdoors takes longer than most people are used to and so we then get straight into preparing lunch. You do not catch your own food on this course; all can provided either still in the fur, in the feather, or in the skin. (Vegetarian options are always available). Here our instructors will guide you through the preparation of you food.

Following lunch Fire is one of the key skills to master for anyone wishing to develop their Bushcraft skills and therefore after shelter building your instructors will introduce you to the many fire lays for different uses, selection of appropriate kindling and tinder, and then show you different methods of getting your fire lit, and maintaining it. You also have the opportunity to try out the different methods, with our instructors providing one to one tuition and guidance.

We will there look at some of the tools used in bushcraft and be taught safe use of knifes and saws.

We finish the afternoon off looking at one of the key principles of survival, water. We will provide you with the knowledge on how to source, collect, filter and purify your water.
